Tess’s Big Day Out Part II by Tess Smith

After finishing with Guest services I needed to wiz home to have a shower and change for...

The Spanish Chamber of Commerce Annual Golden Awards

Once I had rushed home to put my best glad rags on, I walked to Morden Tube Station for the train to Hyde Park and The Spanish Embassy.

Arriving at this fantastic embassy I was greeted with a glass of finest Spanish Cava and some lovely Tapas. It is a remarkable place with massive windows leading on to a courtyard and some amazing works of art on the walls -very grand!!! Sean Frazer also from TAS met me there a little later and we proceeded to listen to speeches all in Spanish… (it gave us time to organise our business cards for the networking session ahead) Once the speeches had finished it was time to mingle, so a couple of glasses of cava later and we were ready to rock and roll.

Sean went one way I went the other and we met occasionally for a drink and more gorgeous tapas. We made lots of useful contacts that night and had quite a few drinks (as you can imagine) By 9pm we were all talked out and decided as most people were leaving we should follow suit and head home!!

It was a good night made even better by free flowing cava (not that I’m an old lush or anything!)

Out and About by Sean Frazer

This year I had the opportunity to attend to the Kent 2020 conference and exhibition which is the largest networking event in the South East. As the economy continues to wobble en-route back to growth, small businesses have learned that it is increasingly important to reach out to prospective customers to drive their sales message; they have also learned that networking is a very cost effective marketing and conversion method.

Kent 2020 not only offered the opportunity to network with businesses within the Kent region, the event also commissioned the Help of PR guru Max Clifford to advise businesses on how to promote their business and deliver their message to the end consumer.

For those who are not familiar with Max Clifford. He has been in the business of public relations; protecting and promoting a wide variety of clients, for well over 40 years.  He has become as instantly recognizable as many of the stars he has represented over the years.  His views and comments are sought on a daily basis for the world’s media on a wide range of subjects and he regularly appears on TV and Radio as a guest on current affairs, news, documentaries and chat shows.

It was a pleasure meeting Mr. Clifford and I truly appreciated his invaluable views on networking and new business development.

Watch the royal wedding from one of our Serviced apartments in London! by Esther Munoz Tong

What could be better than standing somewhere along the procession route? Lots of height! Imagine catching a glimpse of the royal procession from your own window while managing to avoid the worst of the day: pushing crowds and the transport delays are bound to prevail on the day of the Will and Kate’s wedding –not to mention that getting up well before dawn will be a prerequisite in order to get a half decent spot.

The route between Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey goes by The Mall, Whitehall and south of Parliament Square. Any one of these landmarks would be a prime spot to staying.

Once the ceremony has taken place, the newlyweds will return to Buckingham Palace, leading the wedding party in a procession of five horse-drawn carriages.

Or you can always be near located in Hyde Park or Trafalgar Square and where live broadcastings of the wedding on giant screens –and lots of party action- will be taken place dowstairs.

The Apartment Service, 30 this year, has started the research for the third Global Serviced Apartments Industry Report. The report is due in September 2011 and will look at the development of the serviced apartment sector and what (if any) the influence of the worldwide financial crisis has been on this development. We invite anyone with any input on the subject of worldwide Serviced Apartments to engage in the conversation here. We are looking for input from all sides, i.e. serviced apartment operators, booking agents, corporate clients, travel management companies, human resource departments etc.

The 2010 report can still be accessed here. For further information on the Global Serviced Apartments Reports, to receive the 2009/10 report in PDF and/or to register your interest in a copy of the 2011/12 report, please email Bard Vos. Helen and Douglas House by Admin

As we have been asked to select a personal charitable cause to help The Apartment Service celebrate its 30th anniversary with all staff sharing their favourite cause with the world, here is my choice: Helen & Douglas House

They are a hospice for children and young adults, providing respite and end of life care and support to terminally ill children and their families.

I have chosen them because my cousin Charlotte was born with a degenerative disease, and was given a life expectancy of less than 13 years. They have helped her family and herself with respite breaks at the hospice on many occasions. For instance, when Charlotte fell into a coma and the NHS hospital cared for her. However, after regaining consciousness the hospital soon discharged her and sent her home with no follow ups or care plan.

Helen and Douglas House provided my cousin and her family with a care package to help deal with Charlotte’s very unwell condition, something the NHS failed to do.

They have also provided a lot of emotional assistance in helping the family to understand and finally accept Charlotte’s condition through counselling and education about the disease Charlotte suffers from.

With the help of Helen and Douglas House my cousin is 16, exceeding her life expectancy and today is sitting her GCSE Maths examination!

And the countdown begins... by Admin

Our Reservations Manager Eliza Walsh is set to leave us for her maternity leave which starts this Friday, to make sure that everything is ready for the arrival of her baby, due next month.

We are a little bit sad, as she will be missed in the office, but chuffed to bits for her at the same time...

Here is a lovely picture of the future Mum posing after opening her baby presents today...

The Apartment Service at the ITM Conference 2011 by Sara Calvo

Myself and Muireann King attended a fun packed ITM Conference last week and quite literally had a ball!

The organisers hosted a black tie event on the Wednesday night so everyone got their glad rags on and drank and danced the night away.  Once we had finished a most acceptable three course meal with wine flowing, we were entertained by comedian Alun Cochrane, a band played excellent covers in the main ball room and we went a boogied the night away in the silent disco! (We just hope we were not caught on camera).

Around this fun fuelled evening we did actually have to be professional and represent The Apartment Service. We attended several seminars and met some lovely people within the industry.

To round off a successful three days away, Muireann won the auction for two return tickets to Canada with her bid of £700 which she will use to see her brother who now lives there.

Tess’s Big Day Out! (with the Quality control Team) Cross-Training Chronicles Part I by Tess Smith

After a very slow drive from Morden (tailbacks on the M25 turnoff) I arrived as requested at Printing House in Guilford at 10.30am, the same time as the maintenance boys Kamil and David (they just thought some strange woman was approaching them) I offered my services and they quickly piled me up with box’s and sent me to the 4th floor penthouse apartment where Lucy was busy with the agent and various calls from work!

For the next hour I lugged mattresses, mirrors and containers of all sizes from the van to the apartment. Once we had emptied the van, David left and Lucy, Kamil and I started to put the apartment together.

Kamil and I got started on the beds (making them!). We found out the second room really wasn’t built for 2 single beds as you could not see a gap between the beds but as it has already been booked as a king and 2 singles it needed to stay that way for now! Lucy then asked me to unpack all the kitchen box’s and put away into relevant cupboards putting anything dirty in the dish washer.

Once that was done I took my lunch break (as instructed by Ness) and had a wonder round Guilford, which is a great town centre. Lots of really good clothes shops and a farmers market with a really medieval feel. Back at Printing House I directed Helen and Kevin (our new BDE’s) to the apartment so they could get an idea of the layout.

Some more unpacking, putting lamps together general rubbish clearing and I was finished ready for my next adventure!...

Here is a bit about me by Helen Richardson

Four and a half years ago I moved up to Hull, I have been dreaming of moving back to the beautiful South ever since. I am so happy to be given this opportunity to be back in London. All I need now is for my husband to find work and join me!

I worked with both Tess Smith and Sara Calvo at UKIT Training in Tolworth. In fact my career has followed Sara’s, like Sara I also worked for Barclays Bank for many years (17) prior to working at UKIT Training. Whilst living in Hull I was in an HR role, recruiting Special Constables for Humberside Police. This new job  as a Business Development Executive for The Apartment Service appears to be far more varied and exciting.

In my spare time I enjoy travelling, socialising and keeping fit, my favourite class at the gym is Zumba. I can’t get enough of it.
